Now I definitely know Im getting old
My 70-something neighbour just came round with a wonderfully organic gift - a bucket full of parsnips from his allotment. Luckily I like parsnips and recently got hubby to like them too, especially roasted in honey. I thanked my neighbour for being so thoughtful while wondering what I would do with a bucket full. How do you keep them fresh until you need them? Well I did what most 34 year old women do - I phoned my mum.
'You need to blanch them' she said 'Didnt she die recently?' I replied referring to a Coronation Street's character who passed away (which I swear I havent seen in years) No you daft thing blanching is par-boiling them until soft then bag them and freeze them. Well I dont do boiling, just steaming so here I am waiting for my parsnips to soften while sporting the most beautiful bouncy blow-dry that I have just had done for my parents Ruby Wedding tomorrow. I hope he steam doesnt make it frizzy.
Hubby is currently in the loft, making the hatch bigger (as you do). 'What are you cooking? It smells great' he shouted down, 'Parsnips' I said 'Im Blanching' 'Oh' he said after a short pause,'Didnt she die recently?'
